| JUNE IS DESIGNATED GARAGE DOOR SAFETY MONTH - OVERHEAD DOOR COMPANY OF ATLANTA OFFERS GARAGE DOOR AND OPENER SAFETY CHECK-UP | |
| To promote garage door safety, the International Door Association (IDA) and the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) have designated June
2002 as Garage Door Safety Month. The IDA and its affiliated dealers will be working to increase awareness of the possible hazards of garage doors and automatic opener systems, and the need for periodic inspection and maintenance to keep them safe, according to John Nale, Senior Vice President / General Manager of Overhead Door Company of Atlanta and a member of the International Door Association. "The largest and heaviest moving object in most homes is the garage door," Nale says. "Despite the reliability and sophistication of today's automatic garage door systems, they should be periodically adjusted and maintained to remain safe." "Springs, cables, rollers, pulleys and other door hardware are under extremely high tension," Nale explains. "If they show signs of wear, it is important to have them repaired or replaced by a qualified garage door professional." "Every residential garage door operator manufactured since January, 1993 has the infra-red non-contact safety sensors to help prevent an automatic garage door from closing on a child or pet. For safety, garage door operators manufactured prior to 1993 should be replaced," says Nale. "Newer garage door operators and some older operators also have a mechanism that should reverse the door if it physically encounters an obstruction while closing. This mechanism should be tested monthly according to the garage door operator's instruction manual to be sure that it is still functioning properly. If the operator fails to reverse properly it should be adjusted according to the manufacturer's instructions or disconnected and looked at by a qualified garage door professional," Nale adds. "It is also important that children not play near garage doors and that they keep their hands and fingers clear of section joints, hinges, springs, tracks and other garage door parts," Nale says. "Garage door operator wall control buttons should be mounted high enough so that they are out of the reach of small children and the garage door operator transmitters should also be kept out of a child's reach," Nale adds. In conjunction with Garage Door Safety Month, Overhead Door Company of Atlanta is offering a comprehensive garage door and operator tune-up and safety check for the special price of $59.95 for most residences during the month of June. This service, performed by qualified technicians, includes the inspection, testing, adjustment and/or lubrication of over 40 different items on the garage door and operator system.
